2 days left for your Fantasy Chess Olympiad picks

The 2016 Chess Olympiad starts in Baku on Friday, with 1600 players battling for medals and pride in perhaps the chess world’s most enjoyable event. One way to take part yourself is with the Fantasy Chess Olympiad organised by Yorkshire Chess. Pick your dream team and share in the agony and the ecstasy as they take on the rest of the world.

Yorkshire Chess have the details:

The Fantasy Chess Olympiad (FCO) was first conceived in 2012 when an inaugural edition took place in parallel with the Istanbul Olympiad.

In 2014 the second edition of the competition saw almost 900 teams entered by players representing 76 different countries. This year Yorkshire Chess hope for an even greater number of entries. FCO2016 is free to play and it’s a great way for chess fans to get closer to the action in Baku. Players have to select a team of ten Baku participants and they score points based on their performance. Entrants also score points for the accuracy of predictions they make about overall results in Baku.

Dave Shapland from Yorkshire Chess explains what the FCO is all about:

Our objective for the competition remains unchanged. We want to provide chess fans with a fun and exciting way of getting involved with the real-life action in Baku. We want the FCO to play a part in bringing together the global chess community to celebrate the team format of the game that we love playing and watching.

An online entry form is now available for players to submit their teams. There is also a “Hints and Tips” page, including links to a number of useful resources, to help players select their teams. The website will post daily league table updates during the course of the Olympiad.

The closing date for entries is 10.00 (GMT) on Friday the 2nd of September.

A number of partners have already committed to donate prizes for the various competitions. Further details about prizes and the various competition formats will be given on the website and via twitter in the run up to the start date.

Yorkshire Chess would like to welcome all team captains to the Fantasy Chess Olympiad and wishes them ‘Good luck!’
