World Chess Olympiad - Round 5 Highlights

Ukraine continued the victorious run by scoring against another heavyweight - the defending champion China. The key game was Kryvoruchko's win against Yu Yangyi, where the remaining boards were drawn.


Netherlands scored a lucky win against Belarus, as Kirill Stupak lost his way in a sharp position with an extra rook.


USA started with two early wins against Serbia, by Nakamura and Wesley So, and later Caruana escaped against Ivanisevic to close the score on 3-1 in favor of his team.


India ended Azerbaijan's winning streak as Mamedyarov and Naiditsch recorded first loses after 4 consecutive wins. On the other side of the table, Vidit Gujrathi won 5th game in a row. The overall score is 3-1 in favour of India.
 

By the same result Czech Republic, Turkey and Russia defeated Slovenia, Mongolia and Egypt, respectively.

Inspired Georgia demolished Spain 3,5-0,5.


Noting the upsets of the round, Canada beat Cuba 3-1, Latvia defeated Hungary and Paraguay stunned France.

Azerbaijan 2 crushed Turkmenistan 4-0, with wins of Durarbayli, Abasov, Guseinov and Guliyev. Azerbaijan 3 lost to Zimbabwe with a consoling win of Vugar Asadli on the top board.


Wednesday is a rest day and top round 6 pairings are India-Netherlands, USA-Ukraine, Czech Republic-Georgia, Greece-Azerbaijan 1, Canada-Belarus.


In the Women section 27th seed Serbia was on the verge of sensational win against the 2nd seed Ukraine, but sisters Muzychuk managed to escape from bad positions and secure a 3-1 Ukrainian victory.
 

Russia walked past Kazakhstan 3,5-0,5 and Romania defeated Israel in a tightly contested match.
 

Azerbaijan pulled up a huge 3-1 victory against the higher rated Germany. The win was clinched on the lower boards by WGM Mammadova and WFM Hojjatova. WGM Mamedjarova and WGM Mammadzada drew their games.

China easily defeated Italy 3-1, including a beautiful win by world champion Hou Yifan, who recovered after the yesterday's shocking loss.

Lithuania took an early lead with Daulyte's win against Krush, but USA struck back and won 2,5-1,5. Vietnam was leading against India, however in one of the longest games of the day Padmini Rout equalized for the 5th seed.


Azerbaijan 2 tied Spain: Turkan Mamedjarova lost to higher rated Sabrina Vega, and Ulviyya Fataliyeva held the balance on the 3rd board. Azerbaijan 3 lost 1-3 to Turkmenistan.

Top round 6 pairings are Ukraine-Russia, Romania-China, Kazakhstan-Hungary, Georgia-Azerbaijan, Poland-Vietnam.
