President of Azerbaijan makes Olympiad's first move

The 42nd Chess Olympiad started in Baku today. President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev visited the Baku Crystal Hall, the venue of the Olympiad.

The head of state toured the playing hall and made the first move in the games of Azerbaijani GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov with Zimbabwean player Rodwell Makoto, and Russia's Alexandra Kostenyuk with Scotland's Ketevn Arakhamia-Grant.

The President met with disabled players, reviewed the chess analysis room, the media center and the commentators' room.

Then the President was familiarized with the Olympiad's exhibition hall. Expressing his satisfaction with the work done, the President gave a high assessment to the level of organization.

Addressing journalists, President Ilham Aliyev spoke about the importance of the Olympiad. "The Chess Olympiad is of tremendous importance for Azerbaijani sport. This sport has long-standing traditions in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan has successfully hosted a number of prestigious international competitions in recent years. We can say with confidence that our country will organize the Chess Olympiad at a good level as well. I wish all participating countries good luck."
